Can a Night Nanny Support Me if I Breastfeed?

3 min read

One of the most common questions expecting parents have when exploring overnight newborn care is, "How would this work if I'm breastfeeding?"

It's a great question. And the answer is that you can absolutely receive overnight newborn care while breastfeeding.

At Fourth Support Colorado, we believe support should fit your family, your feeding goals, and the way you want to care for your baby. Overnight support isn't about taking over. It's about helping you get the rest and reassurance you need during those earliest days of parenthood.

What does overnight support look like if you're breastfeeding?

When you're breastfeeding, your baby may still need you throughout the night. That's completely normal.

A Newborn Care Specialist or postpartum doula can support your family in the moments surrounding those feeds, helping make the night feel a little more manageable.

Depending on your preferences and feeding plan, overnight support may include:

  • Bringing baby to you for feeds. Your caregiver can help settle baby, bring them to you when it's time to feed, and support you as you get comfortable.

After feeding, they can take over the next steps, such as burping, diapering, and settling baby back to sleep, so you can return to rest.

  • Supporting pumping and bottle feeding. If you're pumping or incorporating expressed milk, your caregiver can help with bottle feeds and other newborn care while you rest. Every family's feeding plan looks different, and your support should be flexible enough to meet you where you are.

  • Helping with everything in between. Overnight newborn care isn't just about feeding. Your caregiver can also help with:

    • Diaper changes

    • Soothing and settling

    • Newborn care and comfort

    • Keeping baby’s sleep space safe and organized

    • Washing bottles and pump parts as needed

    • Helping you feel more confident in those early days

The goal is to take some of the mental and physical load off your shoulders, not to replace you.

Will overnight support affect my milk supply?

This is a question worth discussing with your lactation consultant or healthcare provider, especially if you're establishing your milk supply.

For many breastfeeding parents, frequent feeding or milk removal is important in the early weeks. Your caregiver can support the feeding plan you and your healthcare team have established, including bringing baby to you for feeds or helping with pumping.

We won't tell you to skip feeds, stretch feeding intervals, or change your feeding plan. Your care should be parent-led and aligned with your goals.

What if I want to be the one who feeds my baby?

You absolutely can.

Overnight care does not mean handing over every part of the night. Some parents want their baby brought to them for every feed. Others may choose to incorporate pumping or expressed milk. Some families adjust their approach as they learn what works best.

There is no one-size-fits-all way to receive support.

At Fourth Support Colorado, we take the time to understand what matters to your family and match you with a caregiver who can support your preferences.

Is overnight newborn care right for me?

You may benefit from overnight support if:

  • You're preparing for your first baby and want extra reassurance.

  • You're recovering from birth and need more time to rest.

  • You're breastfeeding and want help with everything surrounding feeds.

  • You're returning to work and need help managing overnight care.

  • You're welcoming twins or multiples.

  • You simply want to feel less alone during the earliest days of parenthood.

You don't have to wait until you're completely exhausted to ask for support.
